Electrical Safety Tips for Modern Homes

In an age where we use technology and electricity in our homes almost all the time, how can we make sure that we are safe when electrical issues happen? In modern living, electricity is a must and a need. However, being careless about electricity can be very dangerous. As modern as a home can be, homeowners should still be well-educated about electrical safety.

Read on and learn electrical safety through these simple tips.

  • First, know where your circuit breaker is. Should there be electrical issues, you should always know where to cut your power.
  • Check all your electrical equipment if they are in the proper working condition. One of the many causes of short circuits is equipment not working or plugged improperly. Check cords regularly for frays or cracks and that they are firmly plugged into outlets and cannot be pulled out easily. Do not staple a cord in place, if the cord is not where you want it to be, use tape. Also, cords should not be placed under carpets or covered with any material as they may become trip hazards. You may not consider them important but frequently checking your cords can help keep them in good condition.
  • Make sure that you use more than one outlet. We use outlets with more than two or three plugged at once, however, this practice should be changed. Avoid overloading one outlet but try to distribute small appliances to different outlets, or if you have the means to do so, call your electrician and ask to add more outlets in the area. Outlets are made to put out a certain amount of energy and many appliances with high wattage plugged into the same outlet will be very unsafe.
  • We use lights all the time, even during the daytime, and light bulbs are one of the most common electrical fixtures in our homes. Checking your light bulbs can keep them from becoming an electrical hazard which is why you should also investigate flickering lights. A flickering light usually means that there is a loose circuit or that the bulb isn’t tight enough. Try to tighten the bulb and if it doesn’t work, call your electrician.
  • When using your hair dryers, hair curlers, hair irons, and other electrical devices in the bathroom, make sure that they are away from water.
  • We all are guilty of leaving devices plugged at some point in our lives, but this could also be a source of danger. Unplug unused appliances or devices and safely keep it out of reach of pets or young children, Read more about electrical safety tips for kids at home.
  • Do not use extension cords for longer periods of time. Extension cords are great for using temporary power; we use them for our laptop chargers, mobile phone chargers, and etcetera. But always remember to unplug those chargers after use. You should never consider extension cords as a power source.
  • Also, check for counterfeit devices, these may include extension cords, outlet adapters, batteries, and the like. Counterfeit electrical devices are made of cheaper quality thus posing a higher risk to your homes.

While it is important to practice electrical safety indoors, you should not neglect electrical safety outdoors as hazards can also be present outside the walls of your home. When using a ladder outside, carefully check your surroundings if they are free from power lines and always think that coming in contact with power lines can be deadly.

Although we use electricity most of the time, it still poses quite a danger if not used properly. And no matter how careful we are, if we overlook just a single thing, it only takes a simple mistake to start a fire. However, when using electricity, small collective efforts and careful compliance with these safety measures will keep us and our families safe.
